The City of Light

Destinations

I often find myself diving into a sensational TV show after everyone has already moved onto the next. Case in point: I have yet to watch White Lotus, which is currently all the rage (as is the Four Seasons property featured in it). Happily though, during the recent holiday season, I finally caught up on one popular series: Emily in Paris. Oh my word, that show is like candy. The city! The fashion! It’s absolutely mesmerizing. And of course, as an avid and passionate traveler, I soak in stories about immersing yourself into someplace new. It’s yet another thing I love about travel and Bill Bryson said it best: “The greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time.”

Needless to say, I was charmed and inspired, so I dedicate this post to the radiant City of Light and the irresistible joie de vivre it embodies.

La Ville Lumière – The City of Light

There are two theories behind how Paris earned its illustrious moniker, the City of Light. The practical notion is that it was the first major city to adopt widespread lighting – an effort well continued into present day. (One of my absolute favorite moments in Paris was watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle to life at twilight.) Another theory suggests that the nickname harkens back to Paris’ pivotal role in the Age of Enlightenment – a period in the late 17th century when philosophers and scientists championed reason, education, and liberty. I wouldn’t be surprised if both narratives held some truth, as Paris has an intriguing blend of gritty reality and introspective charm.

Parisian Delights: A Tapestry of Style and Culture

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned Paris explorer, the city never fails to delight with its endless offerings. Each visit presents a new opportunity to further unravel its secrets and immerse yourself in its ambiance. To ignite your Parisian wanderlust, I’ve curated a collection of inspiring videos, captivating podcasts, and enchanting movie recommendations to transport you to the heart of the City of Light. You can explore this selection here.

And for fellow enthusiasts of Emily in Paris, Travel and Leisure has compiled a list of these must-visit filming locations. Personally, I’ve added the “I Love You: the Wall” to my list. I adore the hidden gems.

Have you had the opportunity to visit Paris yet? Of course summer is one of the more popular times to visit, so if you prefer to savor the city’s ambiance without the throngs of tourists, consider looking at April and October. No matter the timing, as Audrey Hepburn eloquently said in the hit movie, Sabrina, “Paris is always a good idea.”
