We can all fondly remember that time when traveling was as simple as buying a ticket and jumping on the plane. Now it’s a complex set of decisions and logistics (if a possibility at all). With ever-changing restrictions and requirements, extended lockdowns, and new COVID variants emerging, it’s understandable that many feel overwhelmed and nervous by the idea of getting back out there. I hope to bolster your travel confidence and resolve – it’s easier than you may think and it’s needed more than ever.
From the onset of the pandemic, the tourism industry has been working to responsibly receive guests. Though knowledge and regulations are still evolving, destinations are becoming more agile and quick to respond. Some already had a leg-up… I was traveling to Ghana at the end of February 2020 when the world was first responding to the coronavirus. There were health declaration forms and temperature scanners waiting upon arrival in Accra (they’ve managed Ebola outbreaks, after all).
Fast forward eleven months when the CDC announced that negative COVID tests would be required upon entry into the U.S., travel providers quickly implemented solutions. Hotels, resorts, and tour operators (especially in Mexico and the Caribbean) have partnered with testing facilities to make it easier on their guests to get tested prior to their return home – some are on-site and some at no extra cost. Several hotels are also providing accommodation in the event of a necessary quarantine.
Given all the safety measures being applied throughout the industry, early studies are even suggesting that your trip overseas could be safer than the one to the grocery store. There are massive efforts underway to keep you as safe as possible and encourage confidence and ease during your visit. From effective cleaning products and procedures, enhanced ventilation systems, reduced capacities, physical distancing, contactless check-in, etc. The World Travel and Tourism Council recently initiated a “Safe Travels” stamp to help identify destinations (over 220 and growing) that have implemented standardized health and safety protocols. Because it’s important and your visit is sincerely needed.
This has been a difficult year for us all and my heart has gone out to the millions who have been negatively affected by this pandemic – those who have lost loved ones, struggled with illness, and are suffering economically, especially so within my dear travel industry. Many destinations depend on tourism and are weathering a huge blow from the lack of it. The absence of visitors has a significant and rippling impact on local business owners and their employees, community projects and indigenous peoples, and environmental conservation efforts – all of which rely on the presence of tourism to thrive. They are anxious to welcome you back as soon as you feel safe and ready!
Looking ahead…
As you consider future travel, my overarching suggestion is to be flexible. This can start with the destination you choose. That vacation to Europe may be off the table for a while longer, so it’s a perfect opportunity to consider exploring another place – in true traveler spirit. Many countries within the Caribbean, Latin/South America, and Africa for instance have open borders (with some restrictions, of course) and will provide a memorable experience you may not have sought out otherwise. Not to mention destinations in your own backyard.
While travel still remains a highly personal decision at this time, I hope this instills some confidence and optimism in the possibility of it. The well-vetted travel partners with whom I work are providing risk-free bookings and flexible cancellation policies should you need to cancel or postpone in the end. Combine that with a trusted travel advisor and you’ll be supported through every eventuality as you spread your wings again.
To future travels,
Julia
